On our way to and from the southern New Zealand town of Dunedin for our son's 30th birthday, we passed through Oamaru, a New Zealand town known for it's white stone Victorian buildings. These buildings make up an historic precinct in which small businesses struggle to survive, the controlling trust of the area having in my opinion opted for a flawed strategy to revitalise the area.
The buildings are grand, but the outlook is poor as small craft activities struggle to survive. However several years ago someone had the grand idea to brand the town as the Steampunk capital of NZ, if not of the world. I posted on these just a few days before the devastating 22 Feb 2011 earthquake here in Christchurch. Back there again today I see that a number of the delightful 'creations' that previously sat in the traffic islands down the main street of the town now reside at 'Steampunk HQ' on the edge of the Whitestone area (those delightful white Oamaru stone Victorian buildings.).
The airship is brand new.. awesome!!!
